Google Search does not always look like a list of ten blue links anymore. For some searches, Google may show an AI-generated answer before many of the traditional organic results. That answer is called an AI Overview. For a UK service business, this raises a fair few questions. Will people still visit your website? Can your company appear as a source?
Do service pages need to be rewritten for AI? Does schema help you get cited? And do you now need a completely different thing called GEO? There is plenty of confident advice online. Not all of it comes from Google. That distinction matters. Google’s current guidance says the normal foundations of SEO still apply to AI Overviews and other generative features in Search. Google says there are no extra technical requirements for appearing as a supporting link and no special optimisation is required.
So UK service businesses do not need to bin their SEO strategy and start again. But search behaviour is changing, and that does affect how we think about visibility, content, clicks and customer journeys. This guide explains what Google has confirmed, what the SEO industry is still testing and what service businesses can sensibly do now.
What Are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated responses that can appear within Google Search. They are designed to help people understand a topic or question quickly. The overview can include links to web pages that support the information or let the searcher explore the subject further. Google says AI Overviews are shown when its systems decide that the feature adds value beyond normal Search results. They do not appear for every query.
AI Overviews are already available in the UK. Google first expanded them to the United Kingdom in 2024, and their availability has since expanded much more widely around the world. That means they are no longer something UK businesses can treat as a distant experiment. They are part of Google Search.
AI Overviews Are Not the Same as AI Mode
This distinction is worth making. An AI Overview appears within a normal Google Search results page when Google’s systems decide it is useful. AI Mode is a wider conversational search experience that lets users ask longer questions and continue with follow-up searches. Google launched AI Mode in the UK in July 2025. Both features use generative AI, but they are not exactly the same experience.
This article focuses mainly on AI Overviews.
How Google Says AI Overviews Work
Google says its AI features are connected with its existing Search ranking and quality systems. They are not completely separate from normal Google Search. For website owners, that is a very important point. Google’s current AI-search documentation says generative features use content from its Search index and rely on core Search ranking and quality systems to retrieve relevant information.
In plain English:
- Your normal SEO foundation still matters.
- Google needs to be able to crawl and index your page.
- Your content still needs to be useful.
- Your website still needs to follow Search policies.
- And Google still needs to see the page as relevant to the search.
Does a Website Need Special AI Overview SEO?
According to Google, no. Google currently says: There are no additional technical requirements for appearing as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. This is one of the most useful pieces of guidance for business owners because it cuts through a lot of noise.
You do not need:
- a special AI Overview file,
- a secret GEO tag,
- a special AI schema type,
- or a completely separate version of your website.
Good SEO remains the starting point.
What Google Confirms and What SEO Theory Says
This is where we need to be careful.
| Topic | Google confirms | What remains theory or testing |
| Normal SEO still matters | Yes | The exact weight of individual factors in AI citations is not public |
| Special AI Overview optimisation required | No | Agencies may develop their own useful workflows, but these are not Google requirements |
| Page must be indexable | Yes | Being indexed does not guarantee an AI Overview citation |
| Structured data can help Google understand supported information | Yes | Google does not say schema guarantees an AI Overview citation |
| AI Overviews contain web links | Yes | No public formula tells us exactly why one source is cited instead of another |
| Search Console records AI-feature activity | Yes | Older reports may not fully separate all AI visibility |
| Helpful, unique content matters | Yes | There is no official ideal paragraph length for AI extraction |
| Brand authority may matter in wider SEO | Search systems use many signals | Google has not published a simple “brand mention score” for AI Overviews |
This distinction should stay at the centre of any responsible AI-search strategy.
What AI Overviews Mean for Search Visibility
Traditional SEO visibility often meant one main thing: Where does my page rank? AI Overviews make that picture wider.
A business might now appear through:
- a normal organic result,
- a supporting link within an AI Overview,
- a local result,
- a Business Profile,
- an image,
- another rich Search feature,
- or other Google surfaces.
That means visibility is becoming more mixed. Your website may be discovered before somebody ever reaches a standard blue link. Google says AI Overviews can surface links to a wider range of sources and help users discover content they might not otherwise have found. For businesses, that creates an additional visibility opportunity. It does not remove normal organic SEO.
What Is an AI Overview Citation?
People often call links shown within an AI Overview “citations”. Google itself often describes them as supporting links or links to web resources. The principle is simple. Google generates an overview, then provides links that let people explore relevant sources. A user can click one of those links and visit the website. Google’s Search Console documentation confirms that clicking an external page from an AI Overview counts as a Search click.
So an AI Overview citation can create real website traffic. It is not merely a brand mention inside an AI answer.
Can Wixdek Guarantee an AI Overview Citation?
No. Neither can another SEO agency. Google does not publish a process where a business submits a page for an AI Overview and receives guaranteed inclusion. Meeting Google’s requirements only makes a page eligible. Google explicitly says meeting its technical requirements and best practices does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving the content. That means phrases such as:
Guaranteed AI Overview ranking
or:
Guaranteed Google AI citations
should be treated very carefully.
Do You Need to Rank Number One to Be Cited?
Google does not publish a rule saying an AI Overview source must be the traditional number-one organic result. AI features can surface relevant links from different web sources. That creates an interesting opportunity. A page may potentially gain visibility through the AI experience even when the traditional Search layout would have placed another site more prominently. But there is no public Google formula that lets us predict this reliably.
So do not build a strategy around:
“We only need AI citations now. Rankings no longer matter.”
Google’s AI systems are still rooted in its wider Search systems.
What About Brand Mentions?
This is where AI-search discussions can become a bit wobbly. There is a sensible reason to make your business easy for Google and customers to understand. Google recommends establishing clear business details. For local businesses, this includes claiming and maintaining the Business Profile, verifying the official website in Search Console and providing accurate information about the organisation. Structured data can also provide explicit information about the site and business.
That is good practice. But Google has not published a simple rule saying:
Get mentioned on X websites and your brand will appear in AI Overviews.
Nor has it published a public “AI brand authority score”. Brand mentions may still be useful for reputation, discovery and wider digital marketing. Just do not turn an industry theory into an official Google ranking rule.
Do AI Overviews Reduce Website Clicks?
The sensible answer is:
They can change how people click, but the effect is not the same for every search.
An AI Overview may answer part of the user’s question directly. That means some people may get what they need without visiting another website. On other searches, the overview may encourage the person to explore supporting sources. Google says people use AI Overviews to explore linked web content, and Google has reported that users clicking from results pages containing AI Overviews can show stronger engagement with the sites they visit.
Those are Google’s own observations. They should not be turned into a universal promise that AI Overview traffic converts better for every business. Your own Analytics and conversion data still matter.
Search Clicks Need More Context Now
Imagine a plumber has a guide answering:
Why is my boiler losing pressure?
An AI Overview may answer the simple part of that question. Some people may not click. But someone who has read the explanation and still needs professional help may then search:
boiler repair London
That second search has a different intent. This is why service businesses should not judge all search queries in the same way. Informational searches and commercial searches play different roles. AI answers may satisfy some simple informational needs earlier. Commercial service pages still need to be strong when someone is ready to take action.
What AI Overviews Mean for Service Pages
This is where the conversation becomes practical. Your service pages should not be rewritten to sound like an AI encyclopaedia. A person searching for an emergency locksmith, commercial cleaner or pest-control company still needs commercial information.
The service page should clearly explain:
- what you do,
- who the service is for,
- where you work,
- what problems you solve,
- what the customer can expect,
- why they can trust you,
- and how to contact you.
That remains useful whether someone reaches the page through a normal result, an AI Overview or another Google surface.
Don’t Turn Service Pages Into Blog Articles
There is a temptation to stuff every possible question into a service page because AI systems like information. That can ruin the page. Imagine somebody urgently needs an electrician in Camden. They probably do not want to read 4,000 words explaining the history of electrical wiring before finding the phone number. Keep the commercial purpose clear. Answer useful buying questions.
Then use supporting articles for deeper informational topics. Good search-intent mapping still matters in AI search.
Supporting Content May Become More Important
AI Overviews often appear around questions and more complex searches. That gives useful supporting content another role. A cleaning company could publish a guide explaining:
How often should an office be deep cleaned?
A pest-control business might explain:
How can I tell whether scratching in the loft is rats or mice?
A roofing company could answer:
Can a commercial roof be repaired after storm damage?
These articles should give genuinely useful answers. They can also connect naturally with the relevant commercial service when professional help makes sense. That builds a useful search journey without turning every article into a sales page.
Write Clear Answers, But Don’t Write for Extraction Alone
You will often hear advice such as:
Put a 40-word answer immediately below every heading so AI can quote it.
Google does not publish a rule like that. Clear writing is useful. Direct answers are useful. Good headings are useful. But there is no official paragraph length that gets a page into AI Overviews. Write so people can understand the answer quickly. Then provide the depth they need. That is a much safer rule.
Does Structured Data Help AI Overviews?
Structured data can help Google understand information on a page. Google still recommends using supported structured data where it accurately describes visible page content. For a service business, suitable structured data may include supported types relevant to the actual page and business. However:
Google does not say adding schema makes a page appear in AI Overviews.
Its current AI documentation says no special structured data or AI-specific markup is required. So use schema because it accurately helps describe content and supports eligible Search features. Do not sell it as an AI citation switch.
What About FAQ Schema?
FAQ content can still be useful for users. But that does not mean every service page needs FAQ structured data purely for AI Overviews. The content should exist because customers have useful questions. Markup should follow Google’s current supported structured-data policies and eligibility rules. Do not build 30 weak FAQs merely because somebody said AI likes question-and-answer content.
Your Technical SEO Still Matters
Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear with snippets to be supporting links in its AI features. That means traditional technical problems still matter.
For example:
- accidental noindex directives,
- blocked crawling,
- poor canonicalisation,
- broken pages,
- rendering problems,
- and other indexing issues
can still prevent useful content from competing properly. You cannot GEO your way around a page Google cannot use.
Googlebot Still Matters
Another common theory is that businesses need a special new Google AI crawler for Search visibility. Google’s official guidance says that Googlebot controls crawling for Google’s Search AI features. Website owners can also use normal Search preview controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex to control what information Google can show from pages. That is different from Google’s separate Google-Extended control, which applies to certain other uses.
Do not block Googlebot because you think that blocks only AI Overviews. It affects Google Search crawling.
Can You Track AI Overview Visibility?
This changed significantly in 2026. Historically, AI Overview activity was included within broader Search Console Web performance data. Google still explains that AI-feature traffic contributes to overall Search reporting. But in June 2026, Google announced dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. These reports include visibility from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says the report shows impressions from supported generative AI Search features and can be broken down using dimensions such as pages.
At launch, Google said the feature was being rolled out to a subset of websites for testing. So do not assume every Search Console property has the dedicated report yet.
How Does Search Console Count AI Overview Activity?
Google’s current documentation gives us more detail. For AI Overviews: A click on an external link counts as a click. A supporting link needs to be scrolled or expanded into view for its impression to count. The AI Overview itself occupies one position, with links within that overview using that same position methodology. This is useful because it gives businesses a better framework for interpreting Search Console data.
But the numbers still need context.
What Should UK Service Businesses Measure?
Do not stop at AI impressions. Measure the customer journey.
Useful measures may include:
- organic clicks,
- service-page visits,
- calls,
- forms,
- bookings,
- quote requests,
- qualified enquiries,
- and sales where relevant.
Google itself recommends combining Search Console with tools such as Google Analytics to look beyond Search visibility and understand what visitors do after clicking. For a service business, this is crucial. An AI citation that creates ten strong enquiries may be more valuable than thousands of broad informational impressions.
AI Visibility Without Leads Can Be a Distraction
Imagine a London cleaning company gets cited repeatedly for:
How to clean tea stains from a mug
It might receive plenty of visibility. But the company sells commercial office-cleaning contracts. The subject is related to cleaning, but the business value may be tiny. Now imagine it gains visibility around:
How often should a London office be professionally cleaned?
That audience is much closer to a commercial service. This is why SEO for AI Overviews should not become a race for the biggest citation count. Intent still matters.
Local Service Businesses Need Clear Business Information
For local businesses, Google already provides official ways to establish key business information. Google recommends claiming and maintaining a Business Profile so information such as location, contact details, category and photos can be shown across Search and Maps. Keep this information accurate. That is useful for normal local SEO and customer trust. Do not describe it as a guaranteed AI Overview ranking factor because Google does not make that claim.
Example: London Plumber
Imagine a plumbing company serves Camden, Westminster and nearby areas. Its core commercial page might target emergency plumbing services. Supporting content may answer questions such as:
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
When is a leaking pipe an emergency?
Should I repair or replace my boiler?
The service page handles the commercial need. The supporting pages answer earlier questions. If Google chooses one of those guides as a supporting AI Overview source, that creates another discovery route. If not, the content can still serve normal Search users. That is what makes the strategy sensible. It does not depend on winning an AI citation.
Example: Commercial Cleaning Company
A commercial cleaner may have a core service page for office cleaning in London. Supporting content might explain:
How often should an office be cleaned?
What does commercial cleaning include?
How much does office cleaning cost?
These questions sit at different parts of the buying journey. AI Overviews may change how some informational answers are displayed. But the business still benefits from having clear, useful pages around customer needs. The service page should remain focused on helping someone evaluate the service and enquire.
Example: Pest Control Company
Someone who searches:
How do I know if I have rats in the loft?
may receive an AI Overview. A good pest-control guide can still explain genuine signs, risks and sensible next steps. If the user needs professional help, a clear route to the rat-control service should be available. The page should not be padded with repeated keywords simply to chase AI visibility.
Does E-E-A-T Matter for AI Overviews?
Google’s wider content guidance continues to focus on helpful, reliable content and concepts around experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. But E-E-A-T is not a single score you can optimise by adding an author box.
For Wixdek, useful trust signals might include:
- accurate authorship,
- relevant author experience,
- real case studies,
- verified examples,
- clear sources,
- genuine expert review,
- and transparent claims.
That improves the content for people. Do not invent qualifications or client results because someone said AI prefers expert content.
What Service Businesses Should Do Now
You do not need an AI panic project. Start with your existing SEO foundation.
Check Important Pages Are Indexable
Make sure commercial and useful informational pages can actually appear in Google Search.
Clarify Page Purpose
Give each page one main search need. Keep service pages commercial. Keep informational articles useful. Keep pricing content focused on cost. Keep comparison pages focused on decisions.
Improve Weak Content
Answer the real question properly. Remove filler. Add real business knowledge where available.
Add Original Experience
Use real examples, processes, screenshots, customer questions and expert input where they genuinely improve the page.
Strengthen Internal Links
Help users move from informational content to relevant commercial pages when the service becomes the logical next step.
Keep Business Details Accurate
Maintain your official site information and Google Business Profile where relevant.
Use Supported Structured Data Correctly
Add schema when it accurately describes the visible content and follows Google’s rules. Do not add fake markup just to chase AI visibility.
Measure Search and Leads Together
Review Search Console visibility, website engagement and conversion data. That tells you whether increased AI and organic visibility actually supports the business.
What You Do Not Need to Do
You do not need to create an “AI version” of every service page. You do not need to rewrite every paragraph into question-and-answer format. You do not need to add hundreds of FAQs. You do not need an AI-specific schema type. You do not need to create a separate page for every conversational query. You do not need to chase every new acronym someone invents.
Google’s May 2026 Search Central update specifically addressed common AEO and GEO misconceptions and reinforced that normal SEO foundations remain relevant for generative Search.
What About GEO?
GEO usually means Generative Engine Optimisation. It is an industry term. Businesses and SEO teams may use it to describe work aimed at improving visibility in generative search systems. That is fine as a planning label. The problem starts when people present GEO tactics as confirmed Google requirements. Google’s current guidance does not say that a separate GEO discipline is required to appear in AI Overviews.
It says existing SEO best practices remain relevant. Our guide on SEO, AEO and GEO will explain these terms and where they overlap.
Is “Answer-First Content” a Google Requirement?
No. It can still be good writing. If somebody asks:
How often should an office be cleaned?
giving them a useful answer early is sensible. Then you can explain the factors that change the answer. But Google does not publish a rule saying every page must begin with a certain number of words before it can appear in AI Overviews. Use clarity because people appreciate clarity. Not because somebody invented a citation formula.
Are Citations the New Rankings?
Not really. They are another type of visibility. Traditional rankings still matter. Local results still matter. Business Profiles still matter. Commercial service pages still matter. Paid results may matter. AI Overview supporting links may matter. Search is becoming more varied, so businesses need a wider view of visibility. Do not replace one vanity metric with another. Counting AI citations without measuring clicks or leads can become just as misleading as celebrating rankings that bring no customers.
AI Overviews Can Make Brand Discovery Less Linear
A customer may now encounter your business in several stages. They might see your company as a source in an informational search. Later, they may search your brand. Then they may view your Business Profile. Then they may visit a service page. Finally, they may call. That journey is harder to reduce to one ranking position. It makes clear branding, trustworthy information and good measurement more useful.
But we should still avoid pretending Google has confirmed that every brand mention directly improves AI Overview visibility.
Current Google Guidance for AI Search
As of August 2026, Google’s official guidance for website owners is surprisingly straightforward. Keep doing strong SEO. Create unique and useful content for people. Make sure important pages can be crawled and indexed. Use clear internal links. Provide accurate business information. Use structured data where supported and accurate. Use Search Console to measure visibility. Track what users do after the click.
There is no hidden AI Overview switch. Google’s latest generative-search guide says SEO remains relevant because AI features are grounded in Google’s existing Search ranking and quality systems.
How Wixdek Approaches AI Overview SEO
At Wixdek, AI search should not sit in a completely separate box from SEO. We first look at whether the website has a strong normal search foundation. Can Google crawl the important pages? Are the right pages indexed? Does each page have a clear purpose? Do commercial pages match commercial searches? Does supporting content answer real customer questions? Are useful pages connected internally?
Does the business provide clear and trustworthy information? Then we look at how the site is appearing across newer AI search experiences. The aim is not to chase an AI citation at any cost. It is to make the business easier to discover and easier to trust across the changing search journey.
How to Audit AI Search Visibility
AI search visibility should be measured, not guessed. Where Google’s dedicated generative AI Search Console report is available, review which pages are receiving impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Then compare that with:
- normal organic performance,
- important commercial pages,
- brand searches,
- website engagement,
- and leads.
For visibility beyond Google, our future guide on how to audit AI search visibility across Google, ChatGPT and Copilot will cover a broader process. Do not assume that a page visible in Google AI Overviews will automatically appear in another AI platform. They are different products with different systems.
Entity SEO and Business Clarity
Service businesses also need to make it clear who they are.
Your website should consistently explain:
- the business name,
- services,
- service areas,
- contact information,
- expertise,
- and real-world identity.
Google already recommends establishing official business details through tools such as Search Console and Business Profile and using accurate structured information where appropriate. Our future guide on entity SEO for service businesses will explore that topic in more depth without pretending there is a secret entity score.
Original Wixdek AI Overview Graphic
The original graphic for this article should explain the journey in plain language.
Use five stages:
- Google receives a search
- Google decides whether an AI Overview adds value
- The overview summarises useful information
- Supporting web links may appear
- The user may continue researching or visit a source
A second part of the graphic can show the service-business journey:
- Informational question
- Useful supporting content
- Relevant service page
- Enquiry
Keep the graphic explanatory rather than presenting it as Google’s exact internal algorithm.

Current SERP Evidence for Publication
AI Overviews can change by query, location, language and time. That means Wixdek should capture real UK screenshots close to publication rather than relying on an old screenshot from another article.
Useful industries to test may include:
- plumbing,
- commercial cleaning,
- pest control,
- roofing,
- locksmith services,
- and other Wixdek target sectors.
The screenshot should record:
- the exact search query,
- the date,
- whether an AI Overview appeared,
- which sources were shown,
- and whether local or commercial results also appeared.
Do not state that a particular industry “always triggers” AI Overviews based on one search. That would overstate the evidence.
What Should You Do If AI Overviews Affect Clicks?
Do not react to one week’s numbers. First identify where the change happened. Was it an informational article? A commercial service page? A branded query? A non-branded query? Did impressions change? Did rankings change? Did clicks fall? Did conversions change too? Then improve based on evidence. A drop in clicks on a broad informational query may have a different commercial impact from a drop in visits to a high-value service page.
The business outcome should guide priority.
Should You Create More Content Because of AI Overviews?
Only when there is a real gap. Google’s spam policies still apply to AI-era search. Creating large amounts of low-value content mainly to manipulate Search is not a sensible strategy. Do not publish 500 AI-generated question pages because every query looks like an AI Overview opportunity. Create pages when they help your actual audience. Quality and purpose come first.
What AI Overviews Really Change for UK Service Businesses
The biggest change is not that SEO has stopped working. It has not. The bigger change is that search visibility is becoming less tied to one traditional ranking position. People can receive useful information before clicking. They can discover supporting sources inside AI experiences. They can ask more detailed questions. They can move between informational and commercial searches in new ways.
For service businesses, this means the whole customer journey matters. Your information needs to be useful. Your commercial pages need to stay focused. Your brand needs to be clear. Your technical SEO still needs to work. And your measurement needs to go beyond rankings.
Don’t Chase AI Visibility at the Expense of Customers
It would be easy to turn AI Overview SEO into another numbers game. How many citations did we get? How many prompts mentioned the brand? How many AI answers showed the website? Those numbers may be useful. But they need a business context.
For a London service company, the final questions remain familiar:
- Did the right people find us?
- Did they understand what we offer?
- Did they visit the right page?
- Did they call?
- Did they submit a form?
- Did they book?
That is still the bit that matters.
Get Ready for AI Search Without Throwing Away SEO
Google AI Overviews are an important change to Search. But Google’s own guidance does not tell businesses to abandon SEO and start again. Quite the opposite. Google says its existing SEO best practices remain the foundation for appearing in AI-powered Search features. So focus first on the fundamentals. Build helpful pages. Match search intent. Keep important pages indexable. Add real expertise and evidence.
Connect related content. Keep business information accurate. Measure search visibility and leads together. Then monitor how AI search changes the journey. That is a much safer approach than chasing every new AI-search theory that pops up.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated responses that can appear in Google Search. They summarise information and may include links to web sources where users can explore the topic further.
Are AI Overviews Available in the UK?
Yes. Google expanded AI Overviews to the United Kingdom in 2024, and the feature is now available much more widely around the world.
Do I Need Special SEO for AI Overviews?
Google says no additional technical requirements or special optimisation are required. Normal SEO best practices remain the foundation.
Can My Service Business Appear in an AI Overview?
A page can be eligible as a supporting link when it is indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Eligibility does not guarantee that Google will show it.
Does Schema Help You Get Cited in AI Overviews?
Structured data can help Google understand supported information on a page, but Google does not say schema guarantees inclusion in AI Overviews. No special AI schema is required.
Do AI Overviews Reduce Organic Traffic?
They can change how users interact with Search, but the impact depends on the query and website. Google also reports that users can explore supporting web links from AI Overviews. Businesses should measure their own clicks and conversions rather than assume one universal effect.
Can I Track AI Overviews in Search Console?
Google introduced dedicated generative AI performance reporting in Search Console in June 2026, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google initially rolled it out to a subset of websites, so availability may vary.
Does an AI Overview Link Count as a Search Console Click?
Yes. Google says clicking an external page from an AI Overview counts as a click in Search Console.
Should I Rewrite My Service Pages for AI Search?
Not purely for AI. Keep the page focused on the customer and commercial intent. Improve clarity, usefulness, evidence and technical accessibility rather than turning every service page into a long informational article.
Is GEO Required for Google AI Overviews?
No official Google guidance says businesses need a separate GEO strategy to appear in AI Overviews. Google says existing SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative AI Search features.
Are Brand Mentions a Google AI Overview Ranking Factor?
Google has not published a simple brand-mention ranking factor for AI Overviews. Clear business identity and accurate information are useful, but unsupported claims about a specific AI brand score should be treated cautiously.
Should We Publish More Blogs for AI Search?
Only if the content fills a genuine customer or search-intent gap. Publishing large amounts of weak content simply to gain more search visibility is not a sound strategy.
